Interview
  Syd
With influences ranging from Ani Difranco to Jack Johnson and from Dashboard Confessional to Coldplay, Syd lives for pop melodies and sharp hooks. With a strong, haunting voice that carries his songs, and guiar chops to boot, he's "a rising star" (The Day). Relaxed and charismatic onstage and off, Syd brings his Vermont charm with him wherever he goes. It's paid off, as he's won over audiences across the country, playing over 250 shows a year.

Syd's latest album, "Fault Lines" has sold over 2000 copies since release in May of 2004 and was named one of the top 25 Demos of the Year by Music Connection magazine. "Back Home", a haunting lullabye that closes the album earned Syd an award from the Great American Songwriting Contest. Recently Syd took home a Gibson Les Paul after the uplifting pop gem "All I Know" made him a finalist in the Starbucks/Nemo songwriting competition. All this to say that Fault Lines was well worth the effort.

Crammed into short weeks of recording in January of 2004 with no time to waste Syd and guitarist Tuck laid down the basic tracks for the album with producers Todd Hannigan and Jesse Seibenberg (Jack Johnson, Supertramp, Tristan Prettyman) who helped craft an album that captured the songs they had toured in the Fall of 2003. Ranging from the gritty stomp of "This Is What I Get" and the country shuffle of "Dreams" to the anthemic, rousing "Rest of My Life", Syd shows a rare ability to transcend the singer/songwriter genre and make it his own.

As life on the road continues this year with a solo acoustic tour of colleges and band dates in major East Coast cities (including a second annual showcase slot at Boston's Nemo music festival), Syd shows no signs of letting up. Fall of 2006 will see the release of a new record, a new tour, and another new beginning.

Syd was extremely personable; he interacted both before, during and after his performance with students, and they really responded favorably to both his performance and and his personality. In addition, he was very flexible,
which was good for us since we ran into a couple of glitches with the room availability and his payment at the last minute. He took it all very well, and was very easy to work with. we appreciate that very much.
Valerie Vander Mark, Student, Montcalm Community College - Sidney, MI

The Syd show was really good. Everyone definitely enjoyed it a lot. The music was great and his stage presence was too. I've never laughed so much in between songs.

The performance was awesome. Syd did a great job and the audience loved it.

Syd put on a great performance. Great songs and great stage presence (extremely fun). All of the kids loved him. Thanks again for everything. We'd love for him to come back again. He said maybe around the release of his next album?
Brian Vinikoor, After-hours Chair, Northeastern University, Boston, MA

Performance Date: Sept. 29, 2006
The Syd show was a lot of fun. He had great stage presence and sounded great. He seemed to hit it off especially well with all the ladies, I dont know how Darie deals with it! I have already had requests to bring him back soon, hopefully this is something we can do. PS I have attached a few photos of the nights event, in viewing them please keep in mind that I'm not a professional. :-D
Rebecca "Red" Harvey, Loft Chair, Wheaton College, Norton, MA

Performance Date: Sept. 18, 2006
The students LOVED him. He was awesome. He was also very easygoing and had great rapport with the committee, he was amazing. And so are you all. Once again, your agency and artists are VERY easy to work with. I really appreciate that. You make my job so much more enjoyable and I appreciate that.
Leslie Cothren, Assoc. Director Student Activities - Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA

Performance Date: September 19
Syd had another amazing performance here last night. We had a nice crowd . He is an amazing performer and person, and speaking on behalf of CAB and the Georgian Court campus, we'd love to have him back any time.
Mary McKinney, CAB President, Georgian Court University, Lakewood, NJ

Performance Date:
Sept. 14, 2006
Syd’s performance was great. He was very easy to work with and his music was excellent. The audience responded well, and he even seemed to win over some people that I thought would only be out there to heckle him. So, it was a great show overall, and we would definitely like to have him back in the future.
Greg Fenkart, Student Activities Coordinator, Bergen Community College, Paramus, NJ

Performance date:
Sept. 7, 2006
Syd was great! Our students really enjoyed him. The students loved his music. He had a little following out to his car. Really nice guy!!
Shannon Overcash, Asst. Director Student Activities, Dean College, Franklin, MA

Performance Date:
Sept. 1, 2006
Syd's performance was great. I liked it, my staff did, and so did the students. Syd is always welcome here and I’d love to have him again. If you could have him send in a signed glossy, that would be great too He should have the address.
Justin Joseph, Late Night Manager, Binghamton University, Binghamton, NY

Performance Date:
Aug. 31, 2006
Syd had a large audience and his mischevious charm (as expected) won them over. I think everyone had a good time at the show (There is quite a list for t-shirts so I hope he gets those in soon and sends them off
accordingly!) Many were anxious to pick up the new CD so best of luck in its future production.
Kelsey Brewer, Entertainment Chair, Juniata College, Huntingdon, PA

Performance Date: Aug. 31, 2006
Syd was wonderful! The students really seemed to enjoy his music. Yesterday was the first time we hosted a coffeehouse during lunch and I think it was successful.
Kelley Hardie, Asst. Dir. Student Activities, Waynesburg College, Waynesburg, PA

Performance Date:
Aug. 29, 2006
Im really glad you emailed me. I was gonna call you when I got into the office this morning. Syd was awesome. He was so chill and so relaxed and his music really was enjoyed by the crowd. He was by far one of the easiest performers I have ever worked with and I am very happy with the performance.
Thank you very much for refering Syd to us. He did an excelllent job. Its been a pleasure working with you!
Jill Ladouceur, Music Chair, SUNY - Cortland, NY

Performance Date:
April 5, 2006
I personally thought Syd was an extremely nice person, very easy to have a conversation with, which definitely made dinner with him before the show a very comfortable encounter. Aside form his music talent, he is a very funny person as well, which i think shows through a lot in his show. The turn out of the show was up there around our most highly attended shows of the year which was definitely exciting!
Annie Pauler, Coffeehouse Co-Chair, Coe College - Cedar Rapids, IA

Performance Date: April 4, 2006
I only have good things to say about Syd and his performance on Tuesday night. First of all, he is great to work with and we would love to have him back any time. Not only are his songs great, but he keeps the audience entertained and laughing between sets. Honestly, the majority of the students who were at the event have stopped by my office or in the hallways to let me know how much they enjoyed his show.
Brooke Repasky, Coordinator of Student Activities, Benedictine University - Lisle, IL

Performance Date: April 3, 2006
Syd was great to work with. And I have only heard great things from the students. We even went bowling later that night with him!
Katie LaPlant, Assistant Director Student Activities, Saint Mary's University - Winona, MN

Performance Date: April 3, 2006
Syd put on a great performance and was receptive to the audience he was playing too, which
in return captivated and held the audiences attention. Funny guy and very personable and
a good bowler too.
Matt Perkins, Concerts Coordinator, Saint Mary's University - Winona, MN

Performance Date: February 28, 2006
The Syd show went great, we had a pretty good turnout considering music is hard to program on our campus. We actually had some girls who said that they had seen him open up for Hanson I believe. Overall it was a great show.
Tristan Turk, Programming Chair, SUNY - Institute of Technology - Utica, NY

Performance Date: March 7, 2006
The Syd show went very well. We had a good crowd and really good audience feedback. The whole Round Robin setup worked really well and I think that helped to keep people in Fireside. Most of the time with singers people who are coming to fireside just for food will eat and leave, but many of the people who came for food during this show stuck around so I definitely think that speaks volumes....at least to me!
Bethany Smith, Program Chair, Castleton State College - Castleton, VT

Performance Date: March 1, 2006
Syd was great. While the students enjoyed his performance, I personally need to work on Coffeehouse etiquette, some of ours students like to talk during the performance which is fine, but they talk too loud. So I apologize if they were offensive to Syd.
Pat Bristor, Director of Student Activities, Waynesburg College, PA

Performance Date: March 2, 2006
Syd was great! The students all really seemed to enjoy it, he sold a couple CDs - including one to a faculty member who was having a joyous time last week at the performance over lunch. I think performing over lunch is probably hard on a performer, but Syd did an awesome job! I was super pleased. I hope he did not have trouble traveling to NY after the show in the horrible ice/snow weather we were having across the state last Thursday!
Stephanie Thomas, Director of Student Activities, University of Pittsburgh - Titusville, PA

Performance Date:
February 18, 2006
Syd totally stole the show. He was so interactive with the audience everyone loved it! All of the comment cards had great things to say about him, and everyone wants him back!! Alexa didn't really interact with the audience, and having to play after Syd , everyone made comments about how she didn't really talk, or interact.Overall, it was a great show. And we definitely want to have him back sometime.
Megan Kim, Loft Chair, Frostburg State University

Performance Date:
February 24, 2006
I saw Syd perform and got a chance to chat with him and his friend Matt before and after the show. He was very conversational and polite, and so was Matt. Most of the other artists I've met just wanted to perform and get out of there, but Syd took the time to introduce himself to my friends and I, ask questions, and was very open to meeting and getting to know everyone. He was also a great performer on stage and I enjoyed his show. I would recommend him to come play at our school again.
Shelly Yair, Coffeehouse Chair, East Tennessee State University

Performance Date:
October 10, 2005
Syd’s performance was very well! We had probably 150-200 students and employees watch him perform. I heard a lot of great feedback from the students and employees. His sound was excellent and he was easy to work with which makes it even better!!
Susan Wick, Student Activities Director, Southeastern Community College, IA

Performance Date: September 22, 2005
To be honest it was a great night. Syd was a pleasure to work with, as usual, and the crowd loved the show. We had a great turnout, and everyone stayed to the end. He sold a good deal of merch as well, so to my way of thinking I don't know how it could have gone any better.
Keith Tannenbaum, Dean of Students, Bates College - Lewiston, ME

Performance Date: October 6, 2005
A huge "THANK YOU" to both Syd and Dylan for two absolutely outstanding shows last week and your help in making it happen. I have received nothing but positive compliments on their performances from both the students and faculty. Syd has successfully broken new ground at Penn Manor by being the premier concert performance in our new "Artist in Residence" series. Due to the success of his performance, we will be permitted to bring in more artists and groups on a limited basis throughout the year. (a very sincere & personal thank you for helping with the arrangements!) As I explained to Syd, from an educational standpoint, my only disappointment was the limited time available for him to share personally with the guitar class.....but they were absolutely thrilled with the time he spent talking and signing in between concerts and during the lunches. What really mattered was that the fact they could actually witness Syd and Dylan in action! Thanks so much again for your help in providing a fantastic concert and learning experience for my students!
Skip Reddig, Music Coordinator, Penn Manor School District, PA

Performance Date: September 9, 2005
Syd's peformance on friday was great! We had a huge turnout and he put on an amazing show. Please tell him that everyone loved him the next time you talk to him and thanks for everything.
Colin Flannery, Chair, USPB, University of Scranton, PA

Syd’s performance last night was great. He was super easy-going and great to work with, and he really enjoyed himself. I think we hit capacity for the venue; it was standing room only by the end of the night. The crowd was very into the performance and many even stayed after to talk to him. It’s no wonder why we keep having him come back every year.
Mike Palmeri, GA, Center for Campus Life/CAB, Rochester Institute of Technology

Syd was amazing!!! Everyone absolutely loved these guys and they are for sure just a few steps away from blowing up. The music was on fire so was their stage presence. Syd and the band will be eternally remembered as the highlight of the weekend. And then the antics after the fact were amazing. I enjoyed talking to them as much as I enjoyed their music and they kept the party going. We were dancing and having a great time. The weather was fabulous but the band with its stage presence, quick wit, and melodies lulled us into musical paradise. These guys were hot!! It was a pleasure working with them.
Dean Gill, Princeton University

"Once again Syd did not fail to impress. It was amazing and better than ever to hear him play with a full band. A lot of students showed up throughout the afternoon and many commented that Syd sounded more impressive than a lot of the more "national" acts that were performing at Princeton that afternoon. The guys had a great time and once again were a crowd favorite to all."
Kassandra Barnes, Princeton University

Syd’s show on Saturday was absolutely amazing. His performance was probably the peak of Shepfest. There were about 350 people in the venue during the band’s show and many of them were singing along to Syd’s music - I guess from the last show the guys did here in the fall. It was an awesome event, and the guys were nothing but polite to the staff and the audience.
Greg Starliper, Shepherd University

Syd was great! We had over 200 people despite bad weather. Everyone seemed to like Syd more than our headlining act and stuck around to talk to them after the show!
Carey Redmond, Baldwin Wallace College

Syd was excellent. We had around 40 students attend, which is a great number for a Tuesday night! We had many students stay after his performance requesting information for a CD, and his website, so I think the event was a success. I am still hearing a buzz about him on campus!
Maisy Berryhill, DSA – AIB College of Business

Syd was great, as all of your musicians have been. He kept the crowd involved, and his meaningful lyrics were great. And on top of that, the guitar riffs were amazing!
Judson Meeks, Programmer – Mount Marty College

SYD was great! The students enjoyed his music. The girls said he was cute and "hot". I like his music and even put in a request :). He was in tune with the audience and the faculty that was in attendance said they enjoyed listening to SYD while eating lunch. SYD definitely has my stamp of approval.
Cassandra Fluker, DSA – Henry Ford Community College

Syd and Dylan are some of the nicest guys I've ever met. Their performance was amazing, just the right mix of covers and originals, both of outstanding caliber. I was going to purchase one of Syd’s CD's but I went over with my wallet in hand and he just handed me one. It was a great show with a great bunch of guys, keep them as long as you can.
Brian McIntire, UUB Coffeehouse – Western Illinois University

Syd was great. Very nice guy and easy to work with. He showed up early and was very patient with us as we ran a little late with soundchecks. The performance was great. I would definitely recommend him to any other school. I’d also like to bring him back in future years.
Colin Mead, Hamilton College, Concerts Coordinator

Syd was awesome!! Not only did the kids truly enjoy him but so did I! A bunch of t-shirts and CDs were sold and I can say that his CD is in my car right now. Vanessa Thorne, DSA - Pomfret School

Syd's performance went great. Everything ran smoothly, it was good energy, and everyone loved them. They were great to the audience as well. Super friendly guys and we would not hesitate to have them back some other time.
Laura Hulke, Bemidji State University

Syd's performance was great! We had an audience delighted with the group; I kept hearing "these guys are so good!" I'm very pleased with the concert. Syd was very receptive with the place and the audience, and the audience connected with Syd the same way.
Robert Amaya, Programming Board Commissioner - Augsburg College

SYD was great to work with. I loved his enthusiasm...His show was awesome and the students loved him.
Jacquie Jones, Assistant Dir. of Programming, St. Lawrence University

During our Student Organization Fair, Syd and his band went over immensely well with the students. The music was catchy and fun, and appealed to many music tastes. The students were impressed enough to buy their CD's and request to have Syd's Band play at future events!
Kelly Mailly, Newbury College

"Syd’s performance was excellent last night. He was quite easy-going and great to work with. Throughout the performance we probably had 50-60 people who all genuinely appreciated the music. I really think the audience got into it, and their humor made the night go even easier. So thank you very much, it was all around a great show."
Joe Wadcan, Coordinator - Rochester Institute of Technology (NY)

"Syd was amazing last night. He put on a great show and Him and Tuck were extremely nice and easy to work with. Everyone I talked to loved the music and they want us to bring him back. Thanks for the help with a great show. We are looking forward to having John Rush on th 21st. Talk to you soon!"
Brandon Gavin, Concerts Chair - Salve Regina University (RI)

"Syd and Tuck were very good. Everyone enjoyed them. They arrived early, set up, did a sound check, had dinner with one of the students, and then performed. The crowd liked them a lot. Syd and Tuck were very sociable after the event and extremely nice during the whole thing. I think the crowd enjoyed Syd’s little conversations and stories between songs. I am sure that for future musical coffeehouse events they will keep Syd and Tuck in mind. Attendance was great, and at one point we had to bring in extra chairs for people to sit."
Christine Pulsifer, Student Activities Assistant - Worcester State College (MA)

"Syd was awesome. My students LOVED Syd's show. He and Tuck were awesome performers and so easy to work with. AND, he even played a little longer for some basketball players who came late to the show from practice. Thanks for hooking us up. You rock!"
Susan Antonelli, Assistant Dean for Student Development - Wheelock College (MA)

"Syd was great. He put on a super show, and the students in attendance really seemed to enjoy him. I know I enjoyed his music. After his show, many, many students (all female I think) stuck around to talk with him a little, and many bought his CD (including myself - of course I passed it off as buying a copy for the office). After he signed all the CD's, he played a few cover songs from his seated position on the floor. Most of those students who had stuck around pulled up some carpet near him and sang along a bit. He went above and beyond what we hired him to do. Syd is a great entertainer, he was great to work with, and he drew a good crowd. We would be happy to have him back on campus."
Dawn Fraser, Assistant Director of Student Activities - Alvernia College (PA)

"Syd was awesome! Our students thought he was great, a welcome change from our last cafeteria performance (cleared the room). Syd was also very easy to work with, and an excellent performer. I'd book him again in a heartbeat. Thanks!"
John Gallagher, DSA - Penn State University - Berks - Lehigh Valley (Reading)

"SYD happened to be my first show that I was involved in... he made me look forward to all of the other bands to come! He was absolutely amazing and everything ran soooo smoothly! He said that he was impressed with the set up that we had for him, and he sounded GREAT!!! After the show he stayed and talked to the audience and sold some cd's. He only had 3 cd's when he left here, so I guess that was good!!! I have had some awesome feedback from the Gannon Community, and people have asked if he could come again some other time!!! Our school news paper wrote an article on him as well."
Julia McConnaughey, Coffeehouse Coordinator - Gannon University (PA)

"The show was really good! Syd said he wasn’t feeling well but he sounded great to us. He was funny and interacted well with the audience. Tuck was really nice, too. We had over 100 people in attendance. The lounge was packed! We were very happy with the show. Thanks for everything you did in helping us to bring Syd to Juniata!"
Dawn M. Scialabba, Director of Campus Activities - Juniata College (PA)

"Syd's show was phenomenal, and his performance was excellent. Crowd reaction was great, everyone has said what a good time they had at the show. I was thoroughly impressed with his professionalism, but his ability keep that fresh energized feeling through out his set. He played great stuff, some new, and personally as a fan I was excited to here his new material. He made himself available after the show to entertain questions from fans, and just sit and talk. It was our pleasure to have him here, and we would love to have him again in the future!"
Dave Daquelente, Exec. Director of Ent. Board - Penn State Erie, The Behrend College (PA)

"The show went well, Syd immediately showed his flexibility and ability to adapt to crazy situations, because we had our amp blow, but quickly found a new one and he went acoustic until we could get the tech side of things up and running well. The audience really seemed to enjoy the show, evident by the large percentage who went up and bought CDs from him. We had between 50 and 75 people there and they all seemed to really enjoy it. He was a great addition to the line-up we have this semester and it was an excellent show."
Sean Adams, Asst. Director for Campus Life - Mount Saint Mary’s College (MD)

"SYD was Awesome, he was Intense, and Incredible! The students received him very well with his easy going attitude and absolutely wanted to hear more from him! I must say that I am extremely happy that I had him kick off our first ever coffeehouse series here at Eastern, because now he has set the mood for more students to come and see up and coming singers/songwriters."
Yovan Reyes, CAB Concert Chair - Eastern Connecticut State University (Willimantic)

"It was an awesome show the crowd loved it we had about 80 people which is big being that it was a big go home weekend. Syd was great he and Tuck had to have a blast it was very interactive and it had to be the best show I've had at AU! Thanks for providing us with affordable prices on such great talent!"
Lisa Keenan, Coffeehouse Chair - Arcadia University (PA)

"I thought Syd's performance was amazing. Syd himself was a great person to get along with, as well as a great performer. Before the show he was very comfortable, and easy to work with. There were plenty of students who were very interrested in Syd. I heard many students talking about looking forward to him before the event, and even more saying how much they enjoyed it after. I think that the best part of Syds performance was how comfortable he was with the audience. The audience felt on a personal level with him in a way, because he would talk a little in between songs and address the audience. Thank you so much for working with CAB."
Therese Andrews, Activities Coord. - Eastern Connecticut State University (Willimantic)

"I'm not really sure where to start with this one. I guess I'll give you a few descriptive words. Professional, personable, talented, and hilarious. I think that all these words totally encompass Syd as a performer. From the second I picked him up from the BUS STATION (ha!) I seriously felt like I had known him for years. I told him earlier in the afternoon, before he went on, that he didn’t have enough confidence in himself, and he came back at me with, "I have confidence I just don’t want to come across as that guy that’s an egotistical maniac." I think that he’s really got his head on straight, and he truly is a nice guy, which I believe in the long run is only going to help him further his career. I had a lot of people ask me who he was again, where he was from, how old he was (people couldn’t believe he was only 20), and where I found him. I think that people were truly impressed with his music, his voice, and his stage presence. Stage presence, funny I brought that up. When Syd is on stage, you can tell that he loves to tell stories, and talk to the audience. However, what I noticed is that it really feels like he talking directly to you. This is a quality that I think every artist should strive to achieve. Overall…..he did an amazing job and I couldn’t be any happier! I wish him the best of luck, and I look forward to seeing him play again."
Meryl Jones, Concerts Chair - LeMoyne College (NY)

"Syd did a great job for us on Friday night. He was great to work with from a professional standpoint and our students also enjoyed working with him. Our venue was full and the families responded well to the music. Thanks for the great deal!"
Lena Previll, Big Green Bean Entertainment - Dartmouth College (NH)

"Syd was amazing!!! The show went very, very well. Throughout the night around 100 students came and went, with a majority staying throughout the whole show. Everyone kept on asking when he was going to come back and play again. Also, Syd was kind enough to stay after the show and do massive autographs and hung out with some of the students in their dorm rooms. So, overall things went awesome. Thank you for letting us do business with ya'll. We greatly appreciated the entire event as a whole and we cannot wait to get him back here again."
Kassandra Barnes, SAB - Transylvania University (KY)

"Syd was outstanding! He is very talented and a great entertainer. But, like I was thinking they would - the kids loved him!!! I told them all about his webpage and I know at least a dozen of students want his cd. We had more students here for his event than any other time! Syd is an awesome guy and really interesting- and most of the girls are not infatuated with him...I enjoyed him, and I hope he had fun here even though we might be the tiniest school ever."
Jill Potter, Activities Coordinator - College of Saint Joseph (VT)

"The Syd show was a great success! We had a good turnout, and Syd interacted very nicely with the audience. I've had a lot of positive feedback since Friday, and it was a pleasure to work with him. Thanks again for introducing him to Merrimack College! ~Jennie"
Jennifer Moore, Coffeehouse Chair - Merrimack College (MA)

"The coffeehouse went well and the students seemed to enjoy the performance. Overall, I was happy with the event and impressed with Syd's follow-up. It was very professional behavior for SYD to actually drive back to the venue to check-in about the performance."
Michelle La Barge, DSA - Lyndon State College (VT)

"Syd gave one group of girls "Weak Knees," and his music was hot, too! Thanks, George!"
Andrea Pujat, Campus Events Coordinator - Rowan University (NJ)

"He was great I'll try to have him back maybe February!"
Vince Conte, After Hours Coord. - Northeastern University (MA)

"They were great! I only wish that our student turn out would've been better, but those who did attend really enjoyed themselves. Thanks George!"
Sonya Quinn, DSA - Thomas College (ME)

"SYD has great vocals, and he got a lot of compliments for it. Not too many people showed up due to the weather but it was a good time for those of us who did."
Froso Tsambazis, Coffeehouse Coordinator - Bryant College (RI)

"The Syd show went well! There were at about 80 students there, and Syd kept them entertained for an hour and a half. He's so young! Talk about relating to the students! Thanks again."
Louisa Jones, DSA - Pomfret School (CT)

Interview (back to top)
Where did you grow up?
Thetford, VT, the smallest small town in the history of small towns. I split my time between there with my Mom and Warren, VT with my Dad.

How did your childhood/upbringing influence your decision to be a musician?

My mom is an actress, my dad is a musician, and my step dad was a jazz pianist and radio DJ. You can see why I turned to music as an outlet. I was always going to shows with my Dad and listening to music at home. I started playing drums at age 12 and I got nothing but encouragement from my family.

What other influences in your life encouraged you to pursue a career in music?

When I was 12 and entering 7th grade, I started drumming. Tuck (my current guitarist) was a bit older than me and had a school rock band. They were looking for a drummer and holding auditions, so I tried out. They were really impressed and encouraging and I got the part. That was a pretty big moment for my self-esteem and musical confidence.

When did you start performing on the road?

I started performing on the road when I was around 17 or 18; so 3 or 4 years ago.

Is there a particular part of the music business you like the most (i.e. songwriting, touring, singing, etc.)?

I like the business part of it; you know the management and the contracts and all that stuff; but I love the performing--why would I be doing it otherwise, you know?

How often do you write?
I write as often as I can. Right now that’s not much, but Tuck and I have sat down and worked some stuff out. When I’m on the road, creativity is pretty dry. Most writing takes place when I get off the road. My friend Katie calls that “creative diarreah” - when you’ve been holding it all in and then it all comes pouring out…you get the idea.

What do you like about touring on the college circuit?
Everything. The kids, the energy, the fact that they’re mostly my peers. The Family Days when there are adults there (adults are always so nice). I dislike some parts of it, but they don’t really have much to do with the college circuit per se, they’re more general things---homesickness, that kind of stuff.

What do you do to pass the time on the road when you're not performing?
Driving, eating, sleeping, talking to Tuck. That’s pretty much it. Glamorous huh?
How would you describe your music? Who do you consider to be your musical influences?
Acoustic pop. Ani Difranco, The Get Up Kids, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Snoop Dogg, Metallica, Soundgarden, Third Eye Blind, Tool, Matchbox Twenty, your mom.

Do you have any formal training?
No, not. I have a grand total of probably 2 hours of training under my belt.

What kind of music do you currently listen to?
I listen to a lot of stuff now because I have an iPod…Tonic, deftones, Bright Eyes, OK Go, Jonatha Brooke, Little Feat, Zwan,

What other passions do you have besides music?
I do web and graphic design and that’s a big part of my life. I’m kind of a secret computer dork. Recently I’ve kind of come to the realization that I’m not really a city boy. I thrive in Boston, but I love the country. My other passions are things snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking, stuff like that. And there ain’t much of that in Boston.

What advice would you give someone who wants to become a full-time musician?
Being stubborn and persistent is 100% more effective than being talented and shy. Don’t think of things as risks---if it’s something you love it’s not a risk, it’s a fact. Do it.
