Program Options: Ideas for presenting Soulfège
on your campus (back to top)
Launched by Soulfège, a group of Harvard-educated musicians,
the Sweet Mother Tour (SMT) is an internationally recognized project
that uses the tools of popular culture (music, film, literature,
and the Internet) to connect young people around the world in an
international dialogue centered on global youth empowerment. Through
a series of interactive workshops, exciting performances, and live
virtual conferencing with youth from around the world, let the leaders
of the SMT take your students on an unforgettable journey to discover
the power and promise of their unique voice.
A) Workshops
SMT workshops engage students in interactive activities and discussions
that examine critical issues in youth development, including but
not limited to:
• leadership
• image and identity
• the influence of hip-hop culture on youth identity
• creating art for social change
SMT workshops encourage students to define their own unique voice
and take a critical look at the current state of the international
media industry and the role it plays in defining their identity.
B) SMT-Meet™
Engage international participants in your SMT Workshop online!
The SMT project is at the forefront of new video conferencing technology
that enables clear and powerful international dialogue between students
around the world. Give your students the opportunity to engage in
a live dialogue with students from Ghana, S. Africa, France, Brazil,
Jamaica, the UK and beyond. SMT-Meet™ Live Virtual Conferencing
can provide an international perspective that will be an invaluable
part of connecting your students to the world beyond their borders.
The technology was a favorite highlight of the first annual SMT
Conference at Harvard University in April 2006 and at the World
Peace Forum in Vancouver in June 2006.
SMT launched a first-of-its-kind interactive online talk show using
this technology at www.sweetmother.org, in August, 2006! The show
featured up and coming hip-hop star Nadirah-X. Produced by multi-platinum
pop legend Dave Stewart, of Eurythmics fame, "Nadz" has
brought her conscious lyrics and authoritative delivery to recent
collaborations with Joss Stone, Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart &
Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics, and on the Grammy-nominated latest
release from Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff. Nadz is back in the studio
working on her debut album titled "Ink.”

Soulfege show was awesome! They were great to work with, very friendly
and personable, and they got the crowd really involved. I think
everybody at our school really enjoyed the show and their style
of music! We hope to get them back again for next year!

Soulfege, they sounded great! They received a lot of compliments,
either directly to them or to me as individuals were passing by
to class, or lunch. Very very pleased with that!

“People broke off and danced, just to boogie with Soulfège's
righteous sound. By the fourth song, members of previous bands were
out on the floor getting down…the room was synched up, making
it hard to tell where the band ended and the crowd began.”
Northeast Performer Magazine
“We
reflect a positive vision of the world,” said Ashong. “As
part of the Diaspora Funk Movement we want to make music that moves
heart, body and soul and uplifts the spirit of people who hear it.”
Boston Herald
“The
music of Soulfège spanned the spirit of the African Diaspora…gorgeous
harmonies backed by a tight band lifted the crowd from its post-feast
stupor for an hour of vigorous dancing.”
