Interview
  Shannon Curtis

In her own words: “I play the piano and sing love songs.”  In the words of the Los Angeles Times, she’s “… a beautiful piano player who sounds like the love child of Fiona Apple and Norah Jones.”  And for fans all over the country, SHANNON CURTIS makes falling in love with her music easy: not only does she release new material all the time – she records for Saint Cloud Records – yet she and her piano have put over 130,000 tour miles on her VW Jetta in that same period, getting lots of personal time with fans. Now that’s love.  Music lovers worldwide have been bitten as well – MTV’s The Hills featured her song “Before the Sun” in December, setting off flurries of international downloads, and a South Korean record label will be releasing a compilation album of her previous releases in summer 2010.

Reviews and comments (back to top)

Shannon's performance was great! Everyone really enjoyed her show. The audience was really involved the entire time, because she was very funny and upbeat. I really like how she explained most of her songs before she played them. The piano was also a really nice change to our usual acoustic artists that play guitar and sing. After the show she was also very friendly and easy to work with. We would love to have her back again sometime.
Danielle Hasslinger, Campus Attractions Concerts Chair, North Dakota State University - Fargo, ND

Just wanted to let you know that we were very pleased with Shannon's performance today for our Tunes at Noon event. Her wonderful performance was only enhanced by her engaging and interacting with the students. She was great.
Denise Thomas, Director of Student Life, Lake Michigan College - South Haven, MI

Shannon is an amazing performer and truly a nice person. We didn't have a large crowd, but she entertained like there was a room of 200. She took the time to talk to the students after the show and most everyone there connected to her. You represent quality, House, and we'll definitely work with you for next year.
Sheri Heisdorffer, Student Services Associate, Indian Hills Community College - Ottumwa, IA

Shannon's show was great! We had about the same turnout that we had last time and I think with a different mix of students. A lot of them stuck around again after the show and talked to her. I know the students always appreciate it when artists take the time to chat with them. Shannon has been good about that both times. I was actually able to meet up with her the day after the show and grab coffee with her before she headed to the next event, so it was great to chat with her outside the context of a show.
Courtney Yantes, Grad Student for Student Involvement, William Woods University - Fulton, MO

The show went really well last night - probably one of the better ones we've had this semester, and not even so much in way of attendance, but more of how students responded to Shannon. They LOVED her! Students will sometimes linger after the show, maybe 4-5 waiting to talk to the artist, but students were waiting in a line to talk to Shannon and get her autograph. And then there were several people from the community that came as well - we post our press releases on the school's website so we usually have people from the community coming to events on campus, but Shannon's was the first of the semester that I have seen anyone from the community for the events that our Activities Board has planned. There were two little elderly women who were sitting front and center on the couches for the show and they just loved Shannon's music and I think they bought all three of CDs when the show was over. Overall, I think the students had a great time and really enjoyed the show.
Courtney Yantes, Grad Student for Student Involvement, William Woods University - Fulton, MO

The Shannon Curtis concert was totally awesome! Not only is she really talented, but it was a complete pleasure to work with her. Basically everyone in the audience got in line to buy her cd's right after the concert. I want her to come back!
Stacey Witherbee, President of Activities Board, University of Central Missouri - Warrensburg, MO

She was fantastic!! This is the 2nd time she's been to campus and both shows were great!! The activities board is thinking about trying to bring her back in the Spring or at least next Fall. Our audience was small but mighty and loved her performance!!
Beth Tinsley, Director of Student Life, Blackburn College - Carlinville, IL

I am Khobic Johnson from Central Methodist University. I am in charge of the Wednesday Waves here on Campus. I am one of the residents assistants here and Shannon was great. The audience really liked her and we would love for her to come back in the Spring. I enjoyed her as a person and as a performer. I hope that is all you needed.
Khobic Johnson, Resident Assistant, Central Methodist University - Fayette, MO

Shannon was great and the students loved it. Over the course of the hour, we had between 60 and 80 people watching. She also did very well in CD sales and is a great person! Her soundman was even able to help us with some of the sound. Great recommendation and great artist!
Caleb McGinn, Graduate Assistant, Kansas State University - Manhattan, KS

Shannon is a class-act. Her show is amazing, the students enjoyed it and she is so easy to work with. Her show is very engaging and its cool to see her after the show, talking and interacting with each and every student. Great music, great person. We look forward to having her back in the future.
Ryan McReynolds, Grad Asst. for Student Activities, Rockford College - Rockford, IL

Shannon was great! We had about 40-50 students. She was very friendly and interacted with the audience very well. I was impressed with her professionalism.
Jason Neuhaus, Associate Director of Student Life, Inver Hills Community College - Inver Grove Heights, MN

Shannon's performance went very well! The students were very receptive to her and really enjoyed her music style and set. Shannon was an absolute pleasure to work with.
Chelsey Foster, SMAC Coffeehouse Coordinator, Ripon College – Ripon, WI

Just wanted to let you know how impressed we were with Shannon Curtis. She has such AMAZING talent and sang so beautifully last night. I got fabulous feedback, and many of them talked with her afterwards and bought cd's. She is such a sweetheart and very fun to be with. I think she created a new fan base here at Rockford College. We would be happy to have her back again anytime, as well as any of your other artists. Thank you so much for everything!
Ashley Kohanyi, GA of Student Activities, Rockford College - Rockford, IL

Shannon was a great success. She has great fan base here at NDSU! The audience responded positively. I'm sure NDSU would love to have her back. I will certainly recommend her to the next year's coordinator. Thanks for being so cooperative with everything. Have a great rest of the year!
Palleap Hour, Coffeehouse Coordinator, North Dakota State University - Fargo, ND

Shannon was great! It was so awesome having someone on campus who is a great performer... The audience loved her and I think that she would do well on the campus again! I'll put in a good word for her next year. The audience loved her stories on how she wrote her songs etc...
Jen Fodstad, Campus Entertainment Commission, Concordia College - Moorhead, MN

Shannon was absolutely wonderful to have at WashU and the audience loved her. Unfortunately, since the show was on Halloween, there wasn't a huge crowd. Many stopped by to listen to a song or two on their way out to parties. We loved having her and I hope the rest of her tour goes well!
Erin Que, Residential Life Intern, Washington University – Saint Louis, MO

She was absolutely fantastic. The audience loved her, we loved her, there was really nothing not to love! We will definitely be encouraging next year's governors to bring her back!

Bob Wendland, Coffeehouse Chair for UBG, Augustana College – Sioux Falls, SD

Shannon Curtis put on a great show. She was extremely easy to work with, and a very nice person. The audience really appreciated her performance. We were glad to have her. Thanks!
Mike Neutkens, Student Programming Manager, College of St John’s/St Benedictine University – Saint Joseph, MN

She was wonderful!! She is so talented and gracious and our audience loved her. We were competing with a Volleyball game on campus so our crowd was fairly small, but we all enjoyed her performance. We have a new professor on campus who purchased her CD a couple of weeks before her performance and played it in his class everyday. He asked me if he could meet her prior to the show and get a picture with her. He purchased 2 of each of her CD's and was thrilled with her performance. It is nice when the work we do is so greatly appreciated. Thanks again for fitting her into our schedule. It is always so nice to work with you.
Denise Brewer, Director of Student Activities, Montana State University - Northern – Havre, MT

Shannon was absolutely amazing and sweet. I loved her. She has amazing stage presence. She was so nice and I would love to have her come back!!
Jerrica Cerda, Coffeehouse Chair, Lake Forest College – Lake Forest, IL

Shannon put on a great show. As a musician she was almost spot on to her recordings. It was a smaller crowd for the performance and Shannon hung out before the show talking to people and getting to know them so it was a fun show. The people that were there all really enjoyed Shannon. I received feedback from a few students that were very impressed with her and enjoyed the show. I know a good portion of the audience bought her cds. We enjoyed having Shannon on campus and she was great to work with

Kyle Harris, CAB Live at Loras Chair, Loras College – Dubuque, IA

Shannon put on a really good performance and was flexible with us when the boom stand we had for her disappeared and she had to perform around a strait mic stand. . .despite that she did really well. She related to the students, has a beautiful voice and it was a nice change to have a piano playing instead of a guitar again. Overall the performance was good.
Kevin Broeckling, Dean of Student Affairs, Springfield College – Springfield, IL

The show was great, everyone really loved Shannon. The audience even made her perform an encore. After the show everyone wanted to talk to her and a lot of people bought her album.
Sara Archibald, Summer Activities Co-Chair, Idaho State University - Pocatello,ID

She was GREAT!!!! Everyone who was in attendance loved her and she was so professional and friendly. She worked really well with us. We definately will keep her in mind for future shows! THANKS!!!
Amy Chrispell, President of Student Activities Committee, Lake Superior State University - Sault Sainte Marie

Shannon was great…she was easy to work with, but I don’t think that she knew that we didn’t have a monitor for her…she took it in stride and everything worked out fine. The audience really enjoyed her, and people stayed to hear the entire show…which is always great!
Megan O’Brien, Director of Student Activities – Centre College

Shannon's concert was amazing! All who did attend loved her voice and really enjoyed her witty humor and interaction. I am working with SGA to better develop our programming for next year. we all had a good time!
Jeanne Sandella Director of Housing and Student Activities - Lipscomb University Nashville, TN

The Shannon Curtis show was wonderful, she is an excellent performer. The audience loved her, and had a great connection with her; they would really like us to invite her back. The music was wonderful.
Jodi Rails, Student Center Assistant Olympic College – Bremerton, WA

We all had a really great time and enjoyed Shannon's music very much! She was a great fit for the venue, and very pleasant to work with!
Megan Tyrell, Entertainment Chair, Centralia College - Centralia, WA

Shannon was an excellent performer. The students enjoyed it very much.
Shelley Bannish, Director of Student Programs, Centralia College - Centralia, WA

The concert last night was great!! Shannon was definitely the nicest artist we have worked with this year and her musical performance was even better! I will definitely pass her name of for future Musical Entertainment Chairs. Although the turnout to the concert wasn't excellent, Shannon made the concert very personal and intimate. Everyone loved it and I believe she did very well on merch sales. Thanks for sharing such an awesome individual with Linfield College!
Lacey Peck, Music Chair, Linfield College - McMinnville, OR

Interview (back to top)
What was the first album you ever bought or had given to you?
Each summer when my sister and I went to stay at my grandma’s house, we went through a yearly ritual that led to the purchase of my first cassette tape. She would empty out her piggy bank into which she had put her loose change from the previous year, we’d take it to the bank to have it counted out, and then we’d get to buy whatever we wanted with this enormous sum of money (usually around $10). The year I discovered music, I convinced my little sister that we should pool our money and buy an Amy Grant tape. That purchase was the first of the steady diet of Amy Grant that I grew up on.

Worst/best/interesting job you ever had growing up?
I worked a lot as a babysitter growing up. One evening I was asked to watch the 7-year-old girl next door while her parents went out. During the course of the evening, she first refused to take a bath, later she threw up in the bath tub, and to finish off the night, she chased me around the house hurling swear words at me like a trucker and threatening to stab me with the huge knife she had gotten from the kitchen. That was the worst job I ever had. I don’t remember how I eventually got the knife away from her, but I do remember that I never went next door again.

What influences do you feel are most apparent in your writing?
When I was young, my dad – who was a self-taught piano player – would sit down after dinner and play old standard songs while I would dance around and sing on our green shag carpet. I haven’t listened to that music for years, but since I started writing music for the piano, I am finding that early influence seeping into my writing. Some of my songs sound old-fashioned. I’m pretty certain that’s why.

Where do you find inspiration from as an artist and musician?
I find my inspiration in relationships, in experiences of self-discovery. I write a lot of love songs.

Who are some of your favorite artists, musicians or bands?
I’ve been a fan of Sarah McLachlin for a while. I also like Fiona Apple, Alison Krauss and I recently discovered Beth Orton. I’m a long-time fan of U2 and Radiohead, and I have a soft spot for Coldplay. But more recently, I’ve been listening a lot to an Australian band called Youth Group, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Arcade Fire, Explosions in the Sky.

How do you pass the time on the road between performances?
Well, driving takes up a bunch of that time. So, I spend time admiring the scenery, listening to music, reading (when I’m not driving!), knitting (also a non-driving activity). If I have time off in a city where I’m playing, I love to leisurely eat at a local restaurant or catch a movie.

Humorous story or incident that happened at a previous performance or on the road?
A few months ago, my boyfriend accompanied me on a tour to the pacific northwest. When I was pulled over and given my first speeding ticket ever, I was extremely angry. I fumed for over an hour about how cops should be out fighting crime instead of giving out tickets. Jamie listened patiently for a while, but when he had reached his limit, he said, “Well, they are the California Highway Patrol. It’s their job to patrol the highways. And they give out tickets because speed kills.” That’s like the last thing I wanted to hear, but I decided it was time for me to stop complaining. A few hours later, while cruising down a mountain pass in Oregon, Jamie was pulled over as well. And when the Oregon State Trooper leaned in to deliver the ticket, this is what he said: “Well, Mr. Hill, I’m not sure what you guys get away with down there in California, but here in Oregon we think that going 83 in a 65 is dangerous. And so I’m giving you this ticket as a reminder to slow down because you know, speed kills.” Justice!

Biggest pet peeve while on the road?
I can’t STAND it when I’m hungry and there is nothing to eat but McDonald’s.
