Working with Ryan was great. We had a
flower seed planting activity happening in the Social Hall at the
same time as his performance, which really drew in a great audience.
The students seemed to enjoy his music and a few may have purchased
his CD.

Ryan was great! Actually Ryan was excellent for our Welcome Back Celebration,
his style and tone fit so well with our setting. The faculty and staff
enjoyed him as much as the students did. Thanks for recommending him,
I hope he enjoyed being here, because I we would like to have him
back for some other occasions.

Ryan’s show was wonderful!! He arrived on time and was an absolute
pleasure to work with! Our Friday Night Live series is one of our
programs that doesn’t always receive the highest attendance
because of other priorities that our students tend to have on Friday
nights. However, we had 40 people attend the concert, which is double
what we normally have and I was so happy! Ryan played an amazing show,
and the audience as well as everyone on the board really loved it!
It was a great way to start off our year and I’m looking forward
to working with the other performers we have scheduled through your
agency!

Ryan's show went well even though we had the date mix up. I spoke
with him after the show and he was a delight. We will definitely consider
having him back again next year. We will be working on Fall programming
soon.

Ryan Adcock was great! The turnout was overwhelming and the students
really enjoyed his music. Ryan was especially friendly and easy to
work with. We really enjoyed having him! Also, we sent back some Homecoming
shirts with him for you and Wally. We remembered you asking us about
them at NACA. Ryan said he'd see you in a month or so and would give
them to you then--hope they fit!
Candice Haines, FUN Committee Secretary, Drury University - Springfield,

Ryan Adcock's performance was very applicable for the mood that evening.
Our turn out for the event was smaller, yet respectable. I know people
enjoyed him because he sold mulitple cds and the like. I think he
a had a good crowd connection by talking abit about himself and not
just playing song after song. He was very pleasant to work with. We
got along so well. I especially enjoyed it because I was, for once,
able to make myself a cup of coffee and listen to an artis's full
song. Thanks again. I will be in touch once we start planning next
year's artists.
Chris Frey, Coffeehouxse Chair, Augustana College - Sioux Falls,

Ryan's performance was wonderful. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to
be there for the show, but I was there to greet Ryan and start helping
him set up. He seemed to have a great demeanor and I was sorry to
miss the show. I did hear great things about the performance from
students. We even had a group of students from Hesston College where
he was the night before that wanted to see him again!
Tracy Stoddard, Resident Director, McPherson College - , KS

Ryan sounded great and was very personable. I spoke with him before
the show and he was very nice. The students who went to dinner with
him said he was great! We also gave him a little something for you
and Wally, so hopefully you will see him soon can you get those from
him!

Ryan Adcock was a wonder! He really set the mood for the campout.
I feel like he was the perfect act for this event. I really appreciate
your help on this. Ryan explained the show to the students and it
was as if he worte the program . . .he know more about the Homeless
than I did and was just wonderful with the students and making them
aware. He did his homework . . .
Nick Sutherland, VP of Residence Life, Eastern Kentucky University,
Campout for the Homeless
Everyone really enjoyed Ryan Adcock’s performance. He was great
to work with and very accommodating to the unique performance venue.
We’re glad we had him at USI.
Shannon Couch, Program Advisor for Student Activities –

your help in getting him back here!"

"The Ryan Adcock show on Wednesday went great. One of the best
shows of the semester. The students really liked him and his music.
A lot of students purchased CDs. So thanks for hooking me up with
such a great artist."
Janelle Kuhn, Coffeehouse Chair - Coe College (IA)
"The Midnight Breakfast went very very well! Ryan was well received.
I was a little nervous when I discovered his show was all originals
but he sounds like the guy from Matchbox 20 so it worked out fine.
He even had a little fan club sitting at his feet asking questions
during the break. Ryan is a very talented young man. He relates well
to his audience and you can tell that his is genuinely delighted to
have an opportunity to share his music with people around the country.
He was extremely thankful to be chosen to perform at the breakfast."
Jeff Floyd, Program Coordinator - Western New England College
(MA)
"Ryan Adcock was a positively refreshing performer and a pleasure
to work with. He was on-time, flexible, easy to work with in addition
to delivering a great performance. The students enjoyed his stage
presence as well as his music, he is definitely a talented performer.
He was also low-maintenance and carried all the equipment he needed."
Dianne Spatafore, Director of Student Activities - Lesley University

"Ryan was great. Super nice and gracious and a really great songwriter
and performer. Definitely a role model for our students."
Amy Paciej, Advisor - University of Scranton (PA)
"Ryan, we had a BLAST at your concert. You are a really talented
musician, and I'm glad that we were able to have you in our coffeehouse
series. The students gave me great feedback after the event. Big success!
Thanks again - we'll look forward to having you back again (hopefully
in the actual coffeehouse next time)."
Joseph Mauer, Director of Student Activities - Kenyon College
(OH)
"Ryan put on a super show today at our campus. He truly has a
great deal of talent, and has the life and career that many covet
but few ever get to do. The students were very receptive, and he was
a cool guy to hang out with. He got here early and hung out with myself
and a few of the students before he played. Thanks for your help!"
Landon Clark, Student Activities Asst. - Penn State Univ. - Beaver
Campus (Monaca)
"Ryan’s band went over great! They put together a very
solid set and I heard from multiple people that they want to see him
again. Moreover, Ryan is very easy to work with—a great recommendation."
Jonathan Jorrisen, Program Coordinator - University of Notre Dame
(IN)
"Ryan was great and even though I had seen him perform live before,
he blew my expectations away. He put on a great show and although
the number in attendance was small due to the cold, the ones who saw
the show were very impressed. Thanks for everything!"
Eric Seling, Festivals Chair - College of Wooster (OH)
"Ryan was EXCELLENT!! Very laid back, very accommodating, very
nice (I've already gotten 3 thank yous from him) The student loved
him and can't wait to have him back. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR FINDING
HIM FOR US!"
Shannon Murphy, Programming Board Chair - Canisius College (NY)
"I just wanted to drop you a line letting you know that the students
really enjoyed Ryan Adcock's performance on Tuesday night. He is such
a genuine performer and relates so well with the audience that the
time flew right by and people wanted more. As a person he is outgoing,
warm and funny....he sat around after the show and talked with the
students and that is what they are still talking about. Thank you
for recommending him it was a great success."
Bridget Callahan, Student Activities Assistant - Pennsylvania
College of Tech. (PA)
"Ryan did a wonderful job for us and we would be pleased to have
him back in the future. I found him to be very pleasant and cooperative
(and he has a great sense of humor). He was very respectful toward
the other performer and he was well prepared. Following the show he
interacted very well with the audience members who stuck around to
talk to him or make purchases. Thanks for your help!"
Dawn Wilson, Residence Life Coordinator - University of Cincinnati
(OH)
"Ryan was wonderful! He is a great performer and a great person.
We really enjoyed his show last night. The crowd that we did have
seemed to respond very well to him. Ryan is very down-to-earth and
approachable. We appreciated his flexibility and enthusiasm. Thanks
so much for everything."
Shawn Golden, Center Stage - Frostburg State University (MD)
"Ryan was great. He was without a doubt one of the easiest going
musicians that I have ever had perform and one of most talented as
well. He had great crowd interaction was extremely friendly with the
students. I hope that we can have him back in the future."
Paul Peluso, Center Stage All-Access Chair - Frostburg State University
(MD)
"Ryan's performance was terrific! You guys were awesome to work
with and I think the students really enjoyed the show. We had a small
turnout, but I think that is just because we scheduled this with such
little notice. From what people were saying, I think they all enjoyed
Ryan and his stories. Thanks for helping put this together and I look
forward to working with you again!"
Kevin Schwemmin, DSA - Adrian College (MI)
"I only have one word for Ryan: OUTSTANDING!!! Not only is he
a talented musician, but he also is very easy to work with...he set
a great rapport with the audience almost from the first note. We had
a great crowd that really seemed to enjoy the music, and Ryan. This
one is a great catch for your agency!"
Sharon Bingley, Program Coordinator - University of Michigan at
Dearborn (MI)
"Thank you so much for telling us about Ryan!! He did a great
show! We had a surprisingly big turn out, everyone seemed to really
enjoy themselves. It was a pleasure to have Ryan here. I'll have to
get with you next week to talk about other future performers of this
genre. Thanks again!"
Jennifer Alexander, DSA - Ohio Northern University (OH)
"We all had a great time on Friday with Ryan! He had a great
show, and his sales went very well for our smaller audience. Ryan
made everyone feel like they were a part of the show! Thanks for your
help!"
Robin Gonnam, Special Events Coord. - University of Evansville
(IN)
"It has been quite a long week for me, but everything has paid
off. Yesterday's performance was great. Ryan was extremely nice and
our response was strong. He was a great pick for us, and it all worked
out well for our first coffeehouse in our Cyber Cafe. People seemed
to like his music - there was always applause after each song and
he was able to sell some CDs. Thank you for all of your help with
this process, House! I look forward to working with you again."
Mary Sobczak, Special Events Co-Chair. - Dominican University
(IL)
"I heard nothing but FANTASTIC comments about Ryan!! Everyone
at the show really enjoyed his performance, and a member of the board
told me that a lot of people bought CD's after the show. It was a
very relaxed show, and he was humorous as well as a talented musician.
Personally, I'd think about having him back in the spring, because
he went over really well on our campus, and plus, I LOVE his CD! :o)
Thanks for bringing us a great act, and we can't wait for Bari!! Lindsay
:o)"

Interview (back to top)
Where did you grow up?
I’ve lived in Cincinnati, Ohio since I was three years old.
I love it. It’s a big enough city to have some things to entertain
yourself, but small enough that it’s not overwhelming. New York
City has always scared me…not that I’m going to get mugged
or anything, just the sheer size of it scares me…I’d be
much happier in a small farming community than a true big city.
Did your childhood/upbringing have any
influence on your decision to be a musician?
To this day, I have no idea how I became a musician. My parents are
both microbiologists and I grew up winning science fairs and math
bees. Maybe using the right half of my brain was my way of rebelling.
At any rate, despite the fact that they don’t relate to it,
I was lucky enough to grow up with parents who are extremely supportive
of what I do. A lot of parents would stop talking to their children
if they got out of college and proceeded to try to make a living as
a singer/songwriter. Mine are always the first to cheer me on.
What other influences in your life encouraged you to pursue a career
in music?
At some point, I realized that I just could not ever work for a living.
So, I guess laziness is one of my biggest influences. Not that this
job is easy, I often work 60 hours a week at it, but it’s all
fun. I’ll overhear people talking about a hard day at work and
think “I had a hard day too…but it was tough because I
was writing a new song, not because I was pouring concrete or making
a multi-million dollar sale.” Can I really complain?
When did you start performing on the
road?
My very first tour was in 1999 and it involved maybe four cities.
I camped the whole time and I still barely broke even. But it was
a blast, I haven’t looked back since. Life on the road is addictive.
I think I’ve been to something like 45 states since that first
tour. When you play at home, you have to win over the audience. But,
when I’m in, say Connecticut, folks often give a listen just
because they found out that I live 1,000 miles away…automatic
credibility.
Is there a particular part of the music
business you like the most (i.e. songwriting, touring, singing, etc.)?
Oh jeez, it’s all fun. I suppose touring is my favorite part.
After all, music is really all about communicating an idea to another
human being. The time when that communication is most direct is at
a great performance. I love meeting new people, I love driving, I
love seeing America, I love truck stops, I love rest areas (my favorite
is near exit 83 off of I-80 in Iowa), I love finding local radio stations…there
really isn’t anything that I don’t love about travel.
How often do you write?
Not enough. I probably finish two songs a month. I think every songwriter
has a goal of writing a song every day, but I’ve never even
been able to come close. It’s a very draining experience, but
one of the more rewarding as well. There is no better high that finishing
a really good song.
What do you like about touring on the
college circuit?
College campuses are the single best place to find music fans who
are interested in hearing new music. So many folks in this world just
want to hear something they already know. But, college students seem
to have the opposite viewpoint…”give me something nobody
else knows…give me something new that I can call my own.”
So, it’s obviously the perfect market for an independent songwriter.
What do you do to pass the time on the road when you're not performing?
I’m always the tourist…even in towns where there is absolutely
nothing touristy to do. I love finding that one historical claim to
fame that even the smallest town have. One of my favorites is “the
tree that owns itself” in Athens Georgia. This guy left his
tree to itself in his will. So, the tree owns itself. It has a little
fence around it and everything…very fun.The rest of my time
I divide between reading, getting lost while driving and seeking out
new restaurants. Never, ever, ever eat at a chain restaurant when
you’re out of town. Why hit McDonanld’s when this could
be your only chance to try Ma’s House of Grits.
How would you describe your music?
I usually call myself acoustic rock. Why not?
Do you have any formal training?
In writing. That was my major in college. But, musically, I was pretty
self-taught.
Who do you consider to be your musical
influences? What kind of music do you currently listen to?
I listen to music all day and I’ll listen to just about anything
as long as it isn’t violent or prejudiced in some way. I love
Jazz. I love goofy new age music. I love a good rock song with distorted
guitars and an angry singer. I love bluegrass. Mostly, though I listen
to folks who do what I do. Singer/Songwriters like Glen Phillips,
Damien Rice, Patti Griffin, Dar Williams, Alexi Murdoch, David Gray…all
fantastic.
What other passions do you have besides
music?
As I mentioned, travel. That’s probably the biggest. I’m
thinking of putting together a trip where I would hit all 44 national
parks in the contiguous United States in one 100-day trip. 15,000
miles of driving that is…I know…I’m nuts. I love,
love, love to read. I go through about a book a week…mostly
classic literature stuff. I got out of college with an English major
and I don’t feel like I know anything, so I’m trying to
supplement my degree with a healthy dose of reading. Running is a
new-found love…just finished my first marathon last year. It’s
surprisingly relaxing.
What advice would you give someone who
wants to become a full-time musician?
I suppose the key it to treat it as though it were a normal job. Pretend
like you have a boss looking over you. You have to spend at least
50% (usually more like 80%) of your time on the business end of things
and the remaining on music. I know a lot of great, great songwriters
who have never been heard because they are horrible businessmen. That
being said, write as much as possible. A great song always beats a
great voice…that’s why Bob Dylan is famous. |
