  Drew Holcomb
Memphis native DREW HOLCOMB has played over 500 dates touring the country as a singer/songwriter at clubs, festivals, colleges, and everything in between. His debut album, WASHED IN BLUE, garnered him comparisons to a who's who of respected singer/songwriters. He recently married longtime singing partner and college sweetheart Ellie, and they have since sold out venues such as Nashville's Belcourt Theater and Memphis Hi Tone Cafe. They have appeared on stage with acts like Ryan Adams, Sister Hazel, Marc Broussard, Susan Tedeschi, Lucero, North Mississippi All-stars, and others. Holcomb is delightfully mid-stream, fast honing a voice that seeks to match his influences, generation-defining songwriters like Cash, Dylan, and Springsteen

Drew and Ellie were great. Some of the nicest people I've met in my entire life. They were here on time, were super easy to work with, and on top of all that, great musicians. To be completely honest, I didn't know Ellie was going to be here as well but it was a pleasant surprise. The audience wasvery responsive, I think the audience warmed up as the show went on.Thanks for everything!

Everything went really well with the show. Drew and Ellie had a great performance. We had a lot of great feedback from the show here at Bethany. After the show, several people went up to talk with them and stayed quite awhile after. We would be interested in having them come back some time soon. It went really well with the performers bringing their own equipment!!!

Drew was great. He was a pleasure to work with and a cool guy. The audience seemed to really like him. We are a bit quiet of a crowd so Drew might not have felt like there was much of a response, for our group he had a good response.

He was great! He has great stage presence. I have had several musicians this semester and he was near the top on CD sales after the show. That should let you know how well the show was. Thank you for all your help this semester.

Thanks to Drew for coming in. He played a sort of guinea pig role for us, as we tested the waters to see if mid-day performances would work here at W&J. Response was a little mixed, but I was glad we had Drew. I think we should have started him 30 minutes later so he would had a bigger crowd. Great music, though; we had quite a few compliments!

Interview (back to top)
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Memphis, TN, traveled all over the country. I went to college in Knoxville, TN and spent 6 months living in Scotland .

How did your childhood/upbringing influence your decision to be a musician?
We always had music playing. Every Sunday morning my mother played old hymns and gospel songs on the piano to wake us up to go to church. My dad loved Bob Dylan and I must say that he was my earliest influence. My siblings and I all took some sort of music lessons. Mostly piano, my brother took violin lessons. Around 14, I quit piano and picked up a guitar. Of all my siblings though, I am the only one who stuck with it .

What other influences in your life encouraged you to pursue a career in music?
Listening to good music in high school got it started. There is nothing in the world like a good song, a riveting melody, or thoughtful lyrics. I found music to be very relevant to my soul, and it often sparked my mind as well. I wanted to take part in that process.

When did you start performing on the road?
January 2004

Is there a particular part of the music business you like the most (i.e. songwriting, touring, singing, etc.)?

Performing is the best part of the music business .

How often do you write?
A couple times a week

What do you like about touring on the college circuit?
There are always new ears to my music on the college circuit .

What do you do to pass the time on the road when you're not performing?
I read a lot, find out what the important things to see and do are around town. When I am on the road, I listen to music. I probably spend more money on Cd’s than I do food.

How would you describe your music? Who do you consider to be your musical influences?
My music is a mix of folk and rock n roll, in the classic sense. I love the melodies of rock n roll, but I love the lyrical sensibilities of folk music, and I hope I am doing a good job of blending them. My influences are widespread. I love the older stuff first; Dylan, Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, and Steve Earle. But there is also some amazing newer talent out there. I listen to Ryan Adams and David Gray weekly. They both have a sincere way of putting their souls into their music, and that is a rare talent.

Do you have any formal training?
Not really, a few piano lessons that never stuck in my head .

What kind of music do you currently listen to?
So many different artists it would be hard to list them. I like the alt-country stuff, Brit-pop is always great, Coldplay, Radiohead; they all have creative genius .

What other passions do you have besides music?

Writing, traveling, snow skiing, and I have my pilot’s license and love to fly .

What advice would you give someone who wants to become a full-time musician?
Don’t expect anything to fall in your lap, get out there and work hard .
